I climbed a mountain once –
Not to prove myself
Nor demean its grandeur,
But simply to enjoy the view.
.
I climbed a mountain recently –
Emotional rather than literal
Not because I wanted to,
But because I needed to.
.
I look at mountains often –
Without them a scene feels plain.
It’s not just their beauty,
But the things they hide.
.
I like to imagine,
What’s beyond the mountain –
Another path, a quiet respite,
Something I need to find…
.

Beautiful poem, and I like how you tie it in to some of our deepest thoughts. I think you listed quite a few thoughts that some of us think each day as we go out climbing a mountain, hiking, walking, exercising or perhaps even taking on a new challenge or trying something new. Sometimes we move along because we want to run and find a better place, find a sense of security…and as you said in the poem, sometimes we just need to. For me, whenever I need to think, I just take a walk somewhere – be it the city or a bit of a hill if I’m not too tired π
Hope all is well up in Queensland, Andy. It was a bit of a balmy winter weekend here in Melbourne, but we are back to the cold next week. A taste of summer already π

Thanks Mabel – Balmy Melbourne?? I never experienced that when I was down there hahaha. Sometimes we do just need to do something for ourselves – its not because we are selfish, its because we want to be at our best for others as well as ourselves. I like to walk and think, I also love to ride my motorcycle out into the hills to clear my mind – I call it sieving π Meditation a just watching nature does it for me too. Take care Mabel – rug up π

‘we want to be at our best for others as well as ourselves.’ Now you got me thinking, Andy. We be the best for ourselves so we can give others the best π
It was less than 10’C for most of the day here today. No where near balmy π

I know that I need to be feeling my best to be able to give my best – That’s why there are frequent silent spots with my blog posting regime π Stay warm – only 20 here today Brrr. π

Cheers Dad – I think we all have times when we need a little ‘me time’ and sometime its easy to lose sight of where you are going and what you want, and this helps to restore us. Love ya.

This is another masterpiece, Andy. I especially liked the third stanza… it’s profound. Truly, mountains hide ugliness, they help us to raise our heads to see what lies beyond, they make us climb higher….

Mountains both literal and figurative add a little spice to our lives π – most of the time anyway π Thanks Mani, blessings from Australia π

Beautiful piece, Andy. This idea of mountains hiding something from our view had always appealed to me in more than one sense. This ‘hiding’ urges to ‘know’ what’s there…Like your ending lines- a quite respite, some experience, or… ourselves?

Exactly Kokila! π I love to think about what is there and to then make the journey of discovery/recovery. I’ve often thought how frustrating it must be for a tree, that can’t quite grow tall enough to see over the hill before it hahaha…. I know – I’m crazy π

Andy, what’s the image? An etching of, by…? Nicely expressed as ever.

Cheers Mrs M π. This is a pic I took of Cradle Mountain (iPhone 7plus) in Tassie. I played with it in the iOS app called ‘etchings’. Glad you liked it and the poem ππ

Beautiful in art and in words, Andy. Mountains have so much to give us in many ways, even as they challenge us. Finding oneself may be easier while hiking along a mountain’s trails.
