As the city awakens
So do it’s residents.
I sit here and wonder –
Should I join them?
Does it mean I’m crazy?
To want to be uninvolved,
To be outside of normal,
To be completely free.
Is it even possible?
To live free as a bird,
To reject societies demands,
Never make eye contact.
Can one man ever be an island?
Adrift in other peoples conversations,
Walking along-side but never touching
Another persons soul.
Is it easier to conform?
Nod sagely and smile,
Agree when it truly hurts to do so,
Completely forgive and forget.
Maybe so.
Perhaps a little each way.
Give and take.
Don’t get in too deep.
Mum always said –
Everything in moderation.
I always thought
She was talking about food.
Does it make me crazy?
To dream this way,
Or are we all a little crazy…
Every now and then.
good thought.. man can be an island..not always .. but sometimes..

Even an island has contact with the ocean water and trees grow on it, just like that, it’s hard to be in isolation, but I love to be in solitude.
“Everything in moderation”- that’s a very wise saying by your Mum… 🙂

Thanks Maniparna – Mum is a very wise woman 🙂 and I agree – solitude is a wonderful place to be and it can even be found in the midst of a crowd… if you train you mind 🙂

I relate to this poem. Right now, I want to be a peninsula. I want to be connected to society and yet keep my individuality.

I tried to be an island once, but the coconuts falling off of the palm trees would crack my skull, so I gave that up quickly! Seriously, excellent poem with a lot of great questions I’m still contemplating, as well.

As your wise Mum probably also knew, birds are not all that free anyway. They have their own balancing to do, and we have ours. Hardly anybody balances as well as the girls on the beam at the Olympics, but we must still try.

Beautiful and thought-provoking. Often, I find myself having these ideas: of transcending society, judgements and unspoken regulations. Society’s regulations that say one must be social, one must always participate- that means success to them. However, being alone with your thoughts is more liberating than one can imagine. You have no boundaries. Though society does not tell you this, you are free to go anywhere you want, be who you want to be. To conform to society and fit irrational ideals means to lose one’s identity. But judgement dawns upon us if we do not follow these regulations. There is always a conflict between your heart’s desires and society. What do you think, Andy?

I am often struggling with what society expects of me. I especially find it difficult to swallow the ideas that governments want to press upon us. It infuriates me that a politician or a group in society can stand up and announce that they are speaking on behalf of everybody – they didn’t ask me if I wanted them to do that. Haha, don’t get me started 🙂 great to talk to you

I’ve always been fascinated by poems. It always looks so simple yet it requires so much wit and a wide range of vocabulary. Your work is truly impressive!

It takes courage to be an outlier, Andy. You can’t expect more friends for that: Having more enemies is the only exact offer for you. The more so, government would be suspicious to what you do in the next future if you’re insist on following the path.
But, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Call me when you’re ready.
