beyond the melons
above the garden’s troubles
Spring’s promise awaits
The image in my mind for this haiku was given to me in a story told by a friend at work. She spoke about the time when she was a child and her mother grew melon vines over the roof to save space. She would climb up there sit amongst the vines and watch the world go by – I enjoy wondering what she thought, alone up there… thanks Lena.
What a wonderful haiku! Reminded me of Shelley’s line, “if winter comes, can spring be far behind?”
I was trying to imagine the bliss your friend Lena used to have in her childhood… a perfect place to sit and watch the world… 🙂

Thanks for reminding me of Shelley’s line Maniparna – I love that line. And yes, Lena had a far away look when she recounted the story 🙂

I took the pic while I was staying in Hanoi – my friend who inspired this piece is Vietnamese 🙂
